Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
