Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
